I just bought some new speakers. The base speaker, front speakers, and center work but not the other two. I have them hooked up to an old hp pavillion. How come its like that? Could they maybe be messed up?

You have to go to Control Panel and then to your sound and configure it. That what's causing the problem. At least that was my situation i had to deal with.

Also, if you have a creative sound card, just go to the creative control panel and set it to 5.1 as that usually overrides any windows settings. at least in my experience.

I have an hp computer that is atleast 7 years old. I went to the settings and put on 5.1 surround sound but no luck. I'm using onboard sound, so does this mean that I need a designated sound card?

Also, there are three plugs that go into the computer: Green, Orange, and Black. I only have one hook up on my computer so I can only use either the orange or green.

If your using onboard audio on a 7 year old system im betting that the motherboard does not have 5.1 support.... x-540 has 4 plugs that need plugging into a 5.1 soundcard,if your motherboard does not have these 4 ports for 5.1 and you have just plugged one of them in it wont work.

Id suggest buying a dedicated Creative 5.1 sound card, which one is dependant on your budget realy.

Edit....now you edited the post...just as i thought,You only have one audio port....your going to need a 5.1 card :)
