Hey, i have xp running on my server and it is only 366mhz, so you can imagine it is very slow. I was wondering if i could run a linux based server, and keep XP on my pc's. All i plan to do with the server is for it to hold files for me. If this is possible please let me know, and if you could recommend a version of linux for me to use, i would appreciate that also. Thanks

Yep, that should definately be possible, just install samba on the linux server then it will act just like windows, as fro a linux distro maybe something like slax or dam small linux, but i'm not really too sure. Ubuntu of Mepis coudl be worth a try as they have lots of networking stuff buil;t in, but can be a bit resource hungry

edit: Is this the same server you spent hoours trying to get remote desktop working on?

haha, yes, that is the one:P. I will install linux on another partition so i will still have windows on it. THanks. You seem like the networking/sever guy around here:P

i used slax. I downloaded home edition and it was a live cd, but it worked, and came with samba. I am not using it as my main OS now because i got a PIII 866mhz:) Its very nice, i would recommend it.

ahh, slax, i've got that somewhere on my pc, i'll put it in my old computer now to see what happens, but usually it will just refuse to accept linux distro's
