Linux and Windows

I would like to network, through a router, a Linux laptop to a Windows desktop.

I need to be able to use the desktop's printer, files and internet connection.

I have tried several times with the windows wizard and manually entering information into Linux Ubuntu, but nothing is happening,

I am extremely new at this, and it seems very hard. is it as difficult as it seems to be?
 
I think I'll reccomend XANDROS. It automaticaly detects your network (well, with VMWare anyway) for the linux comp.

Other than that, what type of router do you have?
