Linksys Router Major Issues

Okay so here is the short of it:
I recently found out that my Linksys wireless router that I bought last June is causing all kinds of havoc like freezing my whole system at the Windows loading screen so I can only use Safe Mode, and it will not keep a stable internet connection.

The Long of It
I bought the modem back in June, installed it, and about 4 weeks later my system would only seldom get past the black loading screen. It finally got to the point where it was 1 in about 12 restarts that the computer would move past it. I checked online and thought it was EasyCd Creator 6, uninstalled it, and reinstalled Windows about 5 times. After each time, my problem would go away for a few days then creep back up. After the 5th time, I never had another issue. After each reinstall, I never remembered to reinstall the driver for the router. But for about 6 months my internet hasn't had an issue.

About 2 weeks ago, I couldn't keep a stable connection. No changes in software or hardware. I called the ISP (Qwest) and they tried everything, said it was working fine. I finally tried reinstalling all the software for the modem and the router. My problem was fixed and the internet worked great....for about 5 days.

Now when I turn on my computer it just hangs at the black XP loading screen. I can only use Safe Mode, and right now I'm using it w/ Networking to get online. Only problem with that is that my connection when using it lasts about 5 minutes then just dies. I can't get to another page after the 5 min and I need to restart again in safe mode to get back online.

Talked to Linksys, went to Run, command, and then pinged a few sites like google and yahoo and got 4 replies on each of them so they said my internet was working fine, that it was my system setup. I KNOW that it's the router software because I didn't have this issue while the software was uninstalled, even though I didn't realize it at the time.

The internet connection from the modem to the router is stable, and the router says it has a constant connection as well. But here is another problem. I have two computers hooked into the router, mine and a friend's, and the friend's computer works flawlessly. He can get online, has no issues. I only installed the Linksys software on my computer. The last solution we tired was updating the firmware, and it didn't take at first so we had to upgrade manually. Now the level is at 1.02.00 I believe.

I've tried everything and all I want is my computer to work with the router. I have noticed that people had issues with the routers but only on Windows ME, at least from what I've seen. Please ask for any other configuration notes you think would be helpful in the problem. And ill keep updating my problem. Again, Linksys seems to have abandoned me so I'm looking to wise forum members. Thanks for any help you can provide!!

Current Config:

Windows XP w/ Service Pack 2
AMD 1.7
512 DDR
Actiontec Gateway Modem
Linksys Wireless WRT54G v. 5 Modem
ZoneAlarm

Software for your modem or router doesnt need to be installed anywhere on your machine. You connect to it through IE.

What drivers did you install?

did you run the firmware update? The software is router management software, you can also use the web front end by opening up your web browser and typing 192.168.1.1 in the address bar and then go into your router set up.

I would recommend you hold down the reset button for 15 seconds, power cycle it, go into the web front end and reset up your router. Linksys also has a firmware roll back tool in case you botch a firmware upgrade and brick your router.

Also, I have never heard or seen of a router making the system lock during the boot screen. If windows can not resolve an IP from your router it would self assign one, sounds to me more like a problem with your system.

Okay so since my mate's computer works fine, and the only different is that I didn't install the software for the router/modem on his computer, I'm thinking it has to be the drivers/software for one of those. Stupid question though....how do I uninstall the software for the router? Under the Add/Remove I found the software for the modem, but nothing for the router. It also isn't listed under my Hardware Profile.

I will try to update the drivers for my network (which is built into the motherboard) as well as the modem. The whole 4 week issue was strange too, and that's why I'm having a problem with this whole situation. It just doesn't seem to be logical.

I have disabled both of the firewalls, and currently when I'm in SM w/ Networking, I keep the connection like I said for 5 min or so and then lose it. BUT I learned last night that under my network connections, the connection is still active. However, under Firefox or Explorer I can't get to any webpages, or the IP address for the router or modem.

I have also tried using a different cable and different ports, but still the same issue. I just don't get how it can work for 5 min then just suddenly stop working. The model of the modem is WRT54G and it's Version 5, plus the firmware update.

Thanks for the info, I'll try uninstalling the modem stuff today and keep you posted.

UPDATE:: So before I posted this I got kicked off...but when I ping yahoo.com and several other sites after I can't use Firefox or Explorer any more, they come back with replies, so the net is active on my computer. What's more interesting is that I can run AIM and MSN Messenger without a problem! So it's just my internet windows that will not connect after my 5 min is up. Strange....

so you are getting an IP and you can ping but you can't browse?

open up the command line (assuming you are running windows xp) and type this

Code:
tracert www.google.com

copy/paste results

also do a ipconfig /all and copy/paste results

Okay, so I would do that but I seemed to have solved the problem. A recommendation I got on another board said try to uninstall the modem software. I did this, and my computer booted normally. What I can't figure out is why? Why would that have had any reason to conflict with the router, or at least my system, in such a way that Windows wouldn't even boot up? Hopefully this will be a perm. fix but ya never know....

I have no idea I have never ever installed software for a broadband modem before, nor have i ever installed software for a router either.

For future reference you can always hit F8 at boot up and select last known good configuration if you install something and it botches windows.
