LinkSys router issue

Hi,
I have recently bought a LinkSys wireless router it is all setup and encrypted and both my main pc and laptop connect without any difficulties.

However, the problem i'm having is that when I use a newsgroup reader to download articles I am no longer getting the speed I used to. As in half the speed.

What is causing this and how can i rectify this issue?

Thanks guys,

Woz

Do you have a great connection with full speed? What model is it? Have you tried updating the firmware? Or changing the channel?

Yes I have a 10mb connection and download at a rate of about 1100kbps

Now since the router it goes up and down but only gets to a max of around 700 now.

I haven't updated the firmware and have just left it on the channel is automatically set up on.

The model is: wrt54g ver.7

Please help my rate is still reasonably fast but when u are meant to get faster i want it!

Why don't you try some of the suggestions i offered. The firmware will change that the most, and if it isnt enough, try another channel. This is a very good router, so give it a chance.

Security comes at a cost. Speed is one of them. In my experience, The encryption decryption process slows the connection speeds. While I wouldn't suggest not taking precautionary measures, Ask yourself, am I really transfering information that if someone somehow captured it, I could be at risk? If not, turn it off and to prevent them from connecting, Consider using MAC address filtering and turn off the SSID. Use a wired connection for personal information if it's an option. Another thought, if you have an option to use a lower level of encryption, try the lower setting.

Thanks for the replys guys.

I'll check the firmware - but will this mean i'll have to apply the settings again? Or will it just rememeber them?

Security comes at a cost?! I'd be annoyed to see that I lose HALF my speed rate cause of a router.

How will changing a channel make a difference? I forget what channel it is currently on

I'm pretty sure that when I upgraded the firmware it reset everything on my router.

It's not the router that's slowing your speeds. Wireless by nature IMHO, is screwy. Everything from wireless phones (yours and your neighbors), other networks in the area, Florescent lighting, any other weirless device on the same frequency in range. I would be annoyed as well. Throw in encryption, firewall, spyware monitors etc, and your speeds will suffer. Yours seems excessive though. How are you measuring these speeds?

Question- How were you connected to the internet before when you had good speeds using the news group reader? I've never used one of these, but it sounds like you may be transfering a lot of data. How are your speeds just surfing the internet?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm on a cable modem and I download from newsgroups.

My rate in the newsgroups has always been the fastest possible on my connection. Since the router it has slowed down - too much tbh.

Conneciton is like this:

Router plugged in. Network cable from modem into the first port
PC has network cable into 2nd port
Laptop obviously connects via wirleess

128 bit encryption.
