Linksys connection issue

Hi,

I've been experiencing this problem for some time now, but no one has been able to figure out what is wrong. I am currently on cable connection using Linksys.

You see, everytime I try to sample a song via Amazon.com or Cduniverse.com, my connection gets cut off. And I have to replug in the router's power cable before it will reconnect again. I can't even do a repair on the connection. I tried to view clips from other sites that needed to connect to WMP or Realplayer and the same thing happened again.Basically, as long as it needs to remotely connect to my comp realplayer or wmp, this will happen.

I'm using zonealarm and have tried to shut it down, but the same thing happens. In fact, it happens for my whole home network, whether I am using the desktop that connects to the router directly or whether it's my wireless connection on my laptop.

I think this has to do with my home network coz if i use my laptop at school, it doesn't happen. It was suggested that I use WEP network key for my connection, which i have already done. Still doesn't work.. Anyone can tell me what is wrong?! I am getting desperate here. :(

I'm not really THAT much of an expert with these, but it sounds like it could be the hardware firewall in the router itself is blocking these functions. How old is the router? If you can, just take the router back to where you bought it and exchange it for something else...

You can test it to see if the router is messing up... Hook the modem to the PC and bypass the router. See if you get the same issues... Do you have any parental controls or anything?

MTU settings

You might have your MTU settings in the router set to Auto and it is too high. Try the MTU settings by following the guide on linksys doing a ping -l #### ...etc to find the correct settings. If still no go then Firmware update if there is one. Still no go.... Replace router. Still no go then you might have to get your ISP to replace the modem.

Ok, so I've checked, and my MTU was initially not selected at all. So now I have disabled it. My speed & duplex setting is on Auto.

I tried a firmware upgrade some time ago. In fact, I believe that I did not have this problem Until I did the firmware upgrade (currently no new firmware versions available).

Erm I am not very sure about this, but mine is a Linksys Wireless-B Broadband Router. I am using cable connection, so I don't think I have a physical modem to connect to.

You should. There should be a "box" which has the cable cable connected as input, and an ethernet cable as output. This ethernet cable will go to the router into the wan port, and the computer(s) will connect through the other ports. If you take the ethernet cable from the modem and connect it directly into your computer, you should be able to solve some things.

Hmm..., sounds like there could have been a security update in the firmware that is causing some issues now. You might be able to find an older version somewhere that would work better. Or, you can buy a new router (since that one has to be at least 2 to 3 years old...). You can get a new G router that will work with any wireless-B adapters you have for around $30 on sale at most retailers.
