(I'm sorry for my bad english written)

Hi, i just started offering some services as a computer technician and since I am not going to have many customers for the moment, I will spend some of my free time trying to study more stuff.

Recently I though that it could be a good idea to learn about the pos (point of sale) software so I may be able to install and troubleshoot them. I seriously have no knowledge about this but I know it will be worth it to learn this. But the thing is that I have made a few research on google already, and found absolutely no information about how you learn it, what step you need to take, etc. Im not looking for a school or any formation class, but more for a book that I could order, or e-book, some useful information on websites, etc. I'm ok for repairing computer already, I have comptia a+ but I would like to be able to offer some services for the small business. Also, I live in Montreal, Canada, so I know its probably different systems here then in the U.S.

But anyway, as you can see I am kind of clueless about pos systems/software, so really any information you can share would certainly be appreciated!

Thanks

A lot of POS systems would be complete package ie the whole system is a pre-built unit sold with the software already on there. I would have no idea how you go about learning to troubleshoot those or even the standalone software packages.

Often older peripherals (receipt printer, cash till, etc) will communicate via serial cables, I've had headache after headache messing around with COM ports I'd try learn how to troubleshoot these connections entirely.

Keep in mind there are dozens of different companies offering POS systems and each one is set up differently. Hell, in the restaurant field alone, I could probably name 10 off the top of my head. A lot of larger companies will have their own custom flavor as well, designed by their IT department. Almost all of the POS companies will sell support by their own trained technicians as a package.

Ohhh I get it, that really make sense.. Not sure if I still want to learn this anymore haha.. I think i'll stick with my first idea which was to focus on the computer security field, but yet Im scare I wont find any opportunity for working in this field since I think its not really in demand but I might be wrong.

Thanks to you two for your replies, its more clear to me now.
