Learning More About Computers

My PC is going to be needing some new parts over the next year. My graphics card is a 7850 and I plan on replacing it so I can continue to max graphics. Last time I did a build I looked at what others were getting on here for a similar budget, picked out parts, and posted it here for suggestions.

I plan on saving to do a new build hopefully around this time next year. I figure a new generation of processors and graphics cards will be out by then so I might as well wait. With this build I hope to be more knowledgable about the parts I am selecting. The bigger number must be better mentality does not seem practical.

Does anyone know some good recourses for learning about parts, and their effects on performance? Was hoping for some decent videos or readings. I will be reading over the 101s in each subforum as well.

Tom's Hardware does in depth reviews and benchmarks of new stuff. Read through some of those and see how different cards perform. You'll eventually get a deeper understanding of what's going on with all the different cards.

Also for numbering purposes with both brands it kind of goes like this. The first number is the generation or family of cards. So the GTX 560, 550, 570, and 580 are all the same family. The rest of the numbers typically mean higher is better. For example a 580 would crush a 550. AMD cards work in a fairly similar way. The real problem is when you compare across brands and generations. For a example an R9 280X would crush a GTX 560 but you wouldn't just know that by looking at the numbers. Easiest way is to punch in to google "GTX 560 vs R9 280X" and see what comes up. For that particular match up you might not find much because they're fairly different cards. However with stuff that's closer like an R9 280 and GTX 760, you'd find more.

It seems like a good site with a lot of information to read over. Much of it doesn't make sense but I am sure it will after a while. All I can tell is my 7850 is quite outdated.
