hello all,, this is my first post here,, im somewhat computer literate,, most problems I can solve myself.. but there are those that I have no experience doing and this is one of them.. My laptop has internet from my neighbors wifi(I split the bill and he gave me the password,, I don't leech it).. I have a desktop at my workbench, I do a lot of electronic engineering. I would like to hook my laptop tp me desktop to share the internet from it.. the laptop has windows 7.. the desktop has xp.. Im considering updating the desktop to 7 but im not sore if it will run the software needed to connect my oscilloscope to it.. I have a router and I have an Ethernet cable.. can I just plug the 2 together with the cable or would it be easier to connect them both to the router? I tried both and had some success,, but each time the laptop ;ost its wireless connection and I had to do a system restore to get it back.. im at a loss here and a solution would be greatly appreciated.. thank alot

I'd recommend talking to your neighbor about getting a wireless access point to boost his signal at your house and then just get a wireless card for the desktop.

that's not an option,,hiding it from his wife.. I know it can be done.. I cand remember hooking 2 desktops together years ago with a crossover cable... from what ive read,, if I upgrde the desktop to win 7 it should figure it out on its own throught the routher I have.. but im not sure... looking for directions or a link to some to do this... not trying to buy anymore hardware..

I personally have never been successful in sharing an internet connection. However you may be able to say flash DD-WRT firmware on the router and use it as an access point.

You would have to use a crossover cable between laptop and desktop and bridge the connection between wireless card and lan connection on the laptop. However, I would agree that it would just be better to get a wireless card for the desktop.

thanks so far guys..but somebody has to have the info I need...would cross over cable or router be a better way to go for trying,, I have both,, and both machines are about to be windows 7
