Do you own a laptop or a desktop, or both? Which do you prefer and why?

At the moment I have two desktops, I don't need a laptop at the moment as I don't have the need to have a mobile machine, but in the past I have owned two laptops, a ThinkPad A31 and then a ThinkPad R40. I've owned around 15 desktops in my 14 year life (yes they come and go very quickly!) and I tend to own multiple desktop machines at the same time like I do now. I tend to prefer desktops because I like having the power and a large screen, 24" in my case.

What do you own?

I own both a desktop and a laptop.

My desktop is a gaming computer. I also do a lot of general web surfing, photoshop, and movie watching with it.

I keep my laptop wherever I am at the time. It goes back and fourth to home and school with me. I also bring it to work and use it for web access, driver downloads, and entertainment while at work. Also take it on service calls with me in case I need to test something or retrieve something off the internet.

I do the same sort of things on my desktop. I play Dirt 3, watch Blu-Rays and surf the web on it, as well do doing photo- and video-editing. Forgot to write that in my first post.

Just a desktop for now. My laptop had a good run but it died on me last year. I might pick one up again soon if I feel the need.

I went from both a desktop and a tablet to just a laptop. Having only a laptop is great because I can take everything with me wherever I go without having to always sync everything.

Stats show that most laptops never leave the desk.

Laptops are impossible to upgrade substantially.

Laptops are rubbish at gaming.

I like laptops as they consume less electricity and are very good for internet as we don't require mush of processing power to use internet.
I own both, nothing beats a desktop for the power it can produce.
Laptops and desktops both have their ups and downs.

I own a desktop(sig) as well as a laptop (netbook).
I rarely use my laptop, it basically serves as an external HDD and a test system for Linux Distros.
I hate using laptops, specially their touchpads, and to properly use your laptop you have to carry around your laptop, charger, mouse, flash drive, ethernet cable, spike. So there is nothing portable for me if I carry a laptop, I usually need to use a computer in my college where they have open labs or at home where I have my desktop so do not use my laptop much. I don't even know why I own one.

For a lot of people that is true. However it is nice to be able to shut it and take it off the desk when you need the extra space. Or to take it to the couch for a more comfortable place to surf the web/study.

Laptops are impossible to upgrade substantially.

Not all users are enthusiasts with an endless supply of money and an need to have the latest and greatest. Sometimes Office is all you need.

Laptops are rubbish at gaming.

Gaming is a big market for PC makers. Big, not only.

^ good points BUT

if i am paying a premium for miniturisation and weight reduction, you want to take advantage of it.

Your rebuttal could be satisfied with a small form factor pc or simply a home network to a tablet. The laptop is fine for people like me who travel for work, but the average jo is getting ripped off for sub-standard hardware with little ability to upgrade.

Lol you people complain about laptops not being upgradable.
I have a 15 years old PC which was never ever upgraded. So shut up lol :D
If you don't like them, give them to me :D

I own both, actually more than one of both.

I use the laptops at school, and on the road when someone else is driving. But that is not to say that I couldn't do the same thing with my iPhone, or a small tablet. However, I like having ability to carry it around and play a game here or there, Like Global Operations, or Combat Arms.
The desktops, they are good when doing something that needs pure power, but I rarely use mine at all anymore, as it is quicker to do everything I need on a laptop that is already running than to take the time to boot up a desktop to do it.

Honestly, If I had to choose, I would take a laptop. It would be better though if they would adopt standardized parts for GPU and CPU and make them very easy to get to like on a desktop. That would be the best for all concerned. You could get as much power as you need from a system.

That wont happen on x86 due to power requirements.

I think you're confusing "haven't" with "can't".

There seems to plenty of power available to laptops today. Just standardize it on a 9 cell or 12 cell battery and you have a starting point. Then MXM is there as well as mPCIe and mSATA for attachments. Just need to make the cases a standard, like ATX mobile or something.

You have already said that, but you are not factoring in the miniturisation required, the anti-Gforce design required, the lower power and heat capabilities. I haven't seen a laptop that can run 3 x 30" monitors for BF3 yet, so until then I wouldn't call that 'plenty of power'. Laptops are a compromise for portability, and as such have less of everything else (HDD capacity, power, upgradability). As long as you are fine with that, then cool, but Im not a fan of spending 2K on a laptop that is slower than a $600 PC - especially when the laptop is in all likelyhood going to stay on the desk for good.

well for most people, not enthusiast like you, a laptop with a IPU, or not quite top level MXM GPU, is more than enough.

I can do everything I wish to on my laptops. I see no lack of power.
