laptop not connecting to network

Hi,

I am using a personal laptop (Dell Inspiron 1200/Windows XP) at work and trying to connect to my company's network. The Network Connections on the laptop say that I am connected, but I can't access the web through my browser. I'm using DHCP to get the IP information automatically. I had the exact same problem yesterday, using the same ethernet port, but using a different laptop (a Dell Latitude/Windows XP).

Interestingly, I have used my personal Mac laptop at work before with no problem. Does anyone have any ideas? I have even contacted my company's help desk, but so far they haven't found a solution. Any help would be appreciated!

see if you can load a page via an ip address. if you can, it may be a DNS server issue. also see if you can ping ure gateway, and if you can, try pinging something beyond that, like a website.

also make sure that the network connection does not use a proxy. . .

Same result when I try to load pages via IP. I can successfully ping our IP address, but nothing beyond that (and I'm not sure how to ping the default gateway).

I'm going to check on the proxy...

Hi again,

I can ping IP and gateway, but nothing beyond that, and I found that my employer does not use a proxy server...

More importantly, I ran into the same problem when I tried to use the machine at my house...I could connect to IP and gateway, but nothing beyond. I am totally stumped. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
