Lan

OK, here's the thing; a friend asked me to install her LAN. Her house has 3 stairs, 2 computers are on the 2nd and 1 is on the third. Now I am wondering, should I go with a cheaper wireless setup (not sure if the signal will be powerful enough to reach the computers on the 2nd stair (the access point would be on the third)) or a more expensive but that will definitely work and with less hassle LAN-over-powerline such as the dLAN products from Devolo (http://www.devolo.com/co_EN/produkte/dlan/index.html) which basicly turns your powerline into a LAN and you just need an adapter which you plug into a wall socket for every computer you want to connect to it.

I have seen those power line networks 2wire use to have one and i think linksys also, they seem to work, quite frankly I was never brave enough to try. I know it is probably really safe,,,for me i don't know. So you can not run cat 5 cable ( network cable ) ? Wireless depends on the ambient surroundings...most wireless routers only put out about 3mW of power. There are alkinds of signal boosters that you connect up to your router and configure, then unplug from the network and plug back in anywhere in your house , just need an ac outlet . It will take a weak siganal and rebroadcast. Also do not forget about security on your wireless,,,do that last AFTER you can connect to the internet. Encryption is the only one that will keep out anyone trying to surf in. Netgear has good hardware. You might want to see what network cable would cost to run through the walls...or do your self outside the house. I have a network in my house and I have wireless and also a cat5 cable that goes out a small hole next to my window down to a basement window, through the ceiling . through the bottom of the bath tub, through a hole in a plumbing inspection cover, into a closet, then on to a computer...there is a limit to "how far" I think 384 ft, they may be wrong.
