LAN Setup for Multiplayer Gaming

Ok, I'm at a loss for what to do to connect both of my computers. I don't know anything about this subject, so I was a bit confused by other online guides, so I'm hoping someone here can put the details into lamens (spelling?) terms. I have two computers side by side, I was to connect them to play games with my brother, one of them has a network card and the other does not. How do I go about connecting them? I also have an abundance of spare cords lying about, so I might just have the one I need. I can't really think of any other details, so I hope this is enough for someone to explain how to connect these two computers.

Ok

I have a network card from a mid to late 90s computer left over, I can put that one in, are there a lot of compatibility issues? Or are the networks usually not finnicky? To install it, I put the hardware in, and then use the 'add hardware' tool, then follow the process, right? I recently got DSL, the package came with two cords, a blue and a yellow one, and a modem and other stuff, I have the yellow one plugged into computer A, and I think the blue one might be an Ethernet cable, how can I tell?

It looks exactly like phone wire, but I'm pretty sure it's a little smaller. Plug both of your computers into your modem and make sure they can both see the internet and you should be able to play together then.

Are you talking about ethernet? Ethernet is slightly bigger than phone wire.

Clarify

I'm not sure if it was clear what I was asking, I can get both computers to connect to the internet easily, but I want to set up a LAN connects, I now have both computers installed with a network cards, and I plugged the computers together with an Ethernet cable. However, they still don't seem to respond.

yeah, you need a Crossover cable, or a HUB with two ethernet cables, computers cant talk to one another over straight ethernet

How do I set up the Crossover cable? Will I need anything else besides an Ethernet cable, installed network cards, and a crossover cable?

That is a crossover cable, you use it instead of ethernet cable to connect two computers directly.

You need :
-That (Crossover Cable)
- A Network Interface Card in each computer
- And each computer must be assigned a different IP
(Such as your system as 192.168.1.10, and the other 192.168.1.20)

To assign an IP:
Start>Control Panel>Network Connections>Local Area Connection>Properties>Internet Protocol>Properties.

1. Click "Use the following IP address" and make your system's IP address 192.168.1.10, make the subnet mask 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway 192.168.1.1
2. Now click "Use the following DNS server addresses. Make the preferred DNS server 192.168.1.1, do not fill in the alternate DNS server.
3. Close that window as well as the Local Area Connection window, your system is set-up.

To do this to the next system, Repeat all steps, but make the IP Address (step 1) 192.168.1.20

^ That's for Windows XP, by the way
