Is it worth it?
What can i do with one?
Cheapest server i can build/buy?
Can i get a good server for...how cheap?
Smallest server i can make, I.E portability

Now, i know a lan server hosts, but number two, please name everything i can do with one.

You can use a basic server for a server, but if your using it for a game server, some games require you to actually run the game, so you would need fairly powerful parts.

Well.
I might spend the money towards a watercooling kit. Dont know yet.

But could i buy a router/modem thing with ethernets, that hooks to internet, supplying my lan and i internet and a thing where if i go in css and click LAN itll show up as the partay

thanks

a server would be good for having storage space on the network, and users. but is it really worth it? you will have to have this computer on all the time when you want to use the network also.

how so, if you run a storage sever off your network then id does need to be on to use the other machines, it just needs to be on when you want to pull files from it.

PS, any one crap will do for a file server, just make sure you have a decent ethernet card, and a nice big HDD, you could run linux for save space awsell

if its a proper server, hence users connect to the server to retrieve usernames, and it is used for DHCP etc.. then the server will have to be on for other networked clients to use it. This also applies if it is a fileserver

i doubt he want to set up a domain like that, i like he just means a home network ;)

A lan party server.
not quite like gaming.
but a server where i bring to a location and hook up.
so everyone there is in the same network

thanks
sorry for confusion

Well if you want it to act as a DHCP server so every client on your LAN is on the same network and possibly set up some network shares so you and your friends can share music, movies, etc you would need to set up some kind of server like os. Obviously the cheapest way to do this is either 1) Make linux box or 2) just use a router.

You could mess around with the windows server packages but they are very expensive and require heftier hardware.

Using a router would probably be the easiest since they can act as DHCP servers are pretty portable and would only cost you around 50 dolars for a decent one. You could always later add in a larger switch to your router for more clients, and even offer wifi connections. Setting up a linux box would take more time and effort but at the same time you would learn linux and would be able to map network shares to everyone where they could all dump their media files and then you all could swap music and stuff.

Any kind of router, all of them to my knoweldge act as DHCP servers, which will put all your clients on the same subnet, which is required for windows file sharing.

I recomend going with Linksys or Buffalo b/c of third party firmware options, but any router will act as a DHCP server. If you wanted to make a small lan box, you would run linux and have it distribute IPs via DHCP server service on the linux box.

The router would be the easier and perhaps cheaper way, considering a decent router starts at 50 dollars.

Tlarkin is right on this one,
I go to a number of lan's and what i use as well as every other firend of mine is a Regular router.
Far cheaper and less hassle then building a server.
