LAN problems

Hi.
This is really getting on my nerves, as my computer ethernet connection is having a lot of problems. about a month ago, I had an ethernet connection between two computers at my house. One computer was directly connected to the internet, and the other computer connected to the internet from the first computer via an ethernet crossover cable. I have had no problems with this at all, until my mate changed my IP address, and now my computer wont connect to the internet. The second computer (the computer connecting to the internet via ethernet crossover) does recognise the connection, and it does recognise the first computer. When I go into "my network places" It sees the first computer (the computer connecting directly to the internet) but whenever I open the shared docs it says access is denied. It sees the two little computers down the bottom, and it says that local area connection 4 is connected, and has no problems. My second computer cannot go on the web at all. I have tried to change my IP address again, and everything seems OK, but the internet doesn't work, and I cannot access shared files!
I use this driver on both computers... "Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC" Can someone please help with this, as I am fresh out of ideas?
 Thanks.

Try a new network

Since you have changed the IP on the first computer the second will not recognize it because it is looking for the old IP adress. What you may want to try is setting up an entirely new network connection with both computers. Delete the old network and start from scratch. Since WIndows only looks for a few select things to recognize if everything is working properly, if you change anything you may run into the problems like you are having - especially when it comes to networks. The easiest thing to try is delete the network connection from both computers and set up a new one.

Hope this helps!!;)
