LAN Problem - will not work

my network has been giving me hastle ever since i got my computer. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. i've gone through the useless xp help + support thing about five times, it fails to fix my problems. i must have gone through at least three books on setting it up and i've tried three ethernet network cards and the network is still as sh*t as ever    . I know i have set it up correctly, following instructions. i have a ethernet hub with 2 other computers on it.

i wanted my network to connect to the internet, but the host doesn't seem to connect to the network. All it does is thinks up a new ip address (i've tried setting my own, but that doesn't work either) for about a minute and then the network says it's connected but the internet doesn't work, and i can't get access to any shared files on the client. I try the repair button but it comes up with an error that is poorly explained with a cancel button that doesn't work.

-the two clients can't access the internet or shared files or printers on the host, but they can access each other
-the host cannot browse the clients and says limited or no connectivity after about a minute of "aquiring network address".

Does anyone now how to resolve my network problem?

Here's some info i grabbed of everest home edition about my networked computers:

My computer is a client:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+, 1024MB RAM, Windows XP Home SP2
1GBit Ethernet card "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller" ethernet
-100mbs,
-MTU=1500 bytes,
-IP/Subnet Mask=169.254.235.97/255.255.0.0,
-DHCP=255.255.255.255

The host computer:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 2048mb ram, xp home sp2
SiS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
-100mbs,
-MTU=1500 bytes,
-IP/Subnet Mask=169.254.119.74/255.255.0.0
-DHCP=255.255.255.255

The Hub:
NetGear Dual Speed Hub DS104 (http://www.netgear.com/products/details/DS104.php)
-100mbs
-4 sockets (3 are used)

the host is plugged into the first socket, mine is in the second and the other is in the third. the forth is not used. the host computer has a usb adsl broadband modem.

the wires are ethernet and were custom made to the right length at our local computer shop (ingeniously named "The Computer Shop") and they have worked before. i've checked the wires for breaks and bends, but they all look fine. i've even tried different ones.

So when you say the host you mean your computer has the internet plugged into it, and then your trying to feed it out to the hub? Or are you plugging the internet (from the modem) into the hub? You should plug the modem into the hub and that just splits it. How is it plugged in?

the modem is plugged into what i call the host computer. i can't plug the modem into the hub because it is usb and the hub isn't near a phone socket

Check:

test basic connectivity with the ping commanf from command mode i.e ping 169.254.X.X if thsi is successful then u can eliminate the cables as the problem, also it will bw obvious that its software config. issue.

It amay be that a firewall is preventing access to other computers - its worth checking..

it says
pinging 168.129.0.1 with 32 bytes of data
request timed out
request timed out
request timed out
request timed out

i have. i tried disabling the windows one, sygate and ms antispy but it doesn't make any difference. the network used to work with them running. I also tried repairing windows, reinstalling the ethernet driver

I'VE STILL GOT THE PROBLEM!!! what should i do now? by the way if i set my ip address manually, the "limited or no connectivity" does away, but it still doesn't seem to be on the network. all i see in network places are the files shared on that computer. HELP!!!

Go into device manager on all computers and uninstall all of the network devices. Then double right click, and choose scan for hardware changes. Let windows re install all the device (dont need to install off of the cd again) and then try running through the network set up wizard again.

Just a thought... but everytime I'v seen a dsl modem's ip starting with "169" usually the modem is bridged or it needs a hard reset.
