Switches vs. Routers

Well I am going to have a LAN party in the next week or so and I just need to clear up a couple of things that I am not quite sure the answer to so I hope someone can help me.

1. A switch is better than a router, right? Can you please explain why.

Well no, not really...

A switch DOES NOT connect to the internet, So if you are playing a game like CS:Source through steam you will need to use your router.

If your playing a LAN based game a switch would work.

Hub:A simple internet connection splitting device. The problem is it sends all information to all computers, not just the relavent information.

Switch: A smart hub which sends only relavent information to the corect computer.

Router: A smarter switch (could be considered slower), which usually has options like firewall, dmz connectying to the internet etc... A router has a switch built in.
