Jobs in the computer field?

I'm thinking of some formal certification or schooling so I can get a job
working with computers. I'm not ready to spend 4 years in computer
engineering or programming at university, so I'm thinking maximum 1
or 2 years course at trade school.

I live in Ontario, Canada. I have been a hobby website designer for
past 17 years. I can code valid xhtml and css, I know a bit of mysql
and php, and I can make my way around javascript. I'm also pretty well
rounded creating usable layouts for websites. Recently I've been building
computers as a hobby. I'm pretty well informed with hardware, I have
some experience with networks.

Any suggestions? What pays well, what is in demand, what requires the
least training time for certification?

I'm thinking in the line of network administration, but if there is some way
I can get certified for website design standards within a year or two, I
would preferably go that route.

Thanks :)

Ashworth College does not seem to be accredited, or shady at best. I have a local
college less than 20 minute walk from my house. I will probably attend there for my
courses.

web design pays pretty good and a 2 yr is a certificated course and if you all ready know all that then you should pass fast the least to get certified i thank is at least 2yrs. at least here most job apps i filled out here want at least a 2yr hope it helped at least a little sorry if it doesnt

i would recommend that you get industry experience in web design at your own home.

Ive started up my own hosting company(signature) and i love every minuit of it. Try going freelance too, employers love to see what you have made for clients.

One of my family members just got laid off (company went under I guess) at his job. He built computers of some sort and is a very knowledgeable individual when it comes to the computer field, however most places won't hire someone without a 4 year degree. Plus it'll open up a lot of doors down the road. That piece of paper is almost mandatory in today's world. You might reconsider that four year university :D That's my two cents worth :P

Considering... Consideration complete. No. Next! :D

I am going to be a jerk here. And many others have probably heard this so don't take it too personal.

So you wanna work for Geek Squad for the rest of your life?

But, I noticed you're into web design. Build a portfolio and start building and hosting sites for people and businesses.

You make it sound as if you plan to kill me next week, and I only have one week to enjoy my job at Geek Squad.

I think what he is saying is, that the current spectrum of jobs and the baseline for education these days to get a decent job(eg- not geeksquad) is with a 4 year degree.

its alot of hard work to get a high job in the it division Company's arnt looking for people to met the minimum requirement there look for outstanding people who perform great

I know, I just like to tease people who say "...for the rest of your life?" as if I even know what I will do tomorrow :D

You may want to sit down and put together some long term goals then. If youve been doing websites for 17 years then you must be old enough to know that you dont start a new chapter of your life at the drop of a hat...

Well, I was making websites at age 5. So I still don't drop hats. I'm actually the same age as you. And actually, most of my life seems to begin when a hat drops. As to date there is no planning or consistency whatsoever :)
