My computer guy whilst working on my teen's laptop erased everything. There was a back up on my external hard drive but neither he nor another computer guy could find her iTunes. If she syncs her iTunes to her laptop now all her non iTunes music will be obliterated apparently.

The first computer guy recommends I buy this (ya I know he should buy it but he is my cousin)

Any suggestions or feedback? She lost all her college essays and photos but the i Tunes loss has freaked her out completely.

First, you can set the iPod sync to manual only to prevent wiping the existing songs on the iPod and still allow you to add songs to it.

Second, yes that software will work to re-transfer your songs back to her computer. Note that there is an OS X and Windows version of that app.
