Is this a good headset for the $$$?

All i can say is that Creative products are very good. You wont be disappointed by this headset but look for other reviews just to make sure they are all good.
 
Beware of USB headphones let him know that when they take a crap you will hear a loud explosion that will about kill your heart.
My mother had a pair and thats what happened...wish I was there to see it :P

Going on 2 years old now and I have yet to see ANY "gaming" headphones match the quality of sound these give. Though its above his price but you get what you pay for.
 
^ those don't seem to have a mic though, and she plays with friends and needs one...

also, just so you know, those were actually cheaper on amazon ($56 shipped). I looked before I saw they didn't have the mic.

+1, I have those same headphones right now and I would recommend getting the ones with the jack because the USB, you have to install drivers for and sometimes depending on your sound card, you can run into an interference with audio drivers like I have and its harder to configure. I definately recommend these but not the USB version.
 
I have this headset, not a bad one, but defiantly could get better for a little more, I leave that headset sit in a drawer and I use my Turtle Beach X1's for gaming.
