Is there any good codec for mkv?

I can't seem to find any player or codec that plays mkv well. VLC is always an option but I've never really liked it. I'm using windows 7 (wmp 12) I found a plugin for that but it doesn't have the ability to use the different subtitle/ audio tracks. Anybody know of any solution to this? Such a good encoding format I would think there'd be better support for it...

What's wrong with VLC? It's a bit simplistic, but it plays damn near everything flawlessly. I've used it with mkv with no problem. The only file type that I've had any trouble using VLC for is .rmvb and I use Real Alternative for that.
