Is the computer repair business too saturated/dead to get back into?

Well, I have started a PC repair business back in 07, but honestly didn't do anything with it. I am out of a job right now, and was thinking of getting back in. But do people still pay to get their computers fixed? The only thing I really have to lose in this, is time. What do you guys think? I would really like to work for myself instead of other people. And although I don't see that many PC repair businesses around here, I see tons of people advertising pc repair on craigslist.
 
If it's in a small town then you well not do so good. In my small town of 5000 people there have been 5 computer repair shops and all have closed down with in 7 month's.
I'm sure if you sell products like screens, hard drives, video cards, custom computers made by your self and what not in a good sized town you schould do well. It's all up to you to do it.
 
In my small town of 5000 residents or so, we are the only computer shop in town. We only have two competitors, and they're both jokes. The farthest one away has almost nothing and doesn't know what they're doing. The other competitor rips customers off, not really fixing their computers and returning them in worse condition then they were in. They're currently selling their house and cutting employee wages, so they're probably going out of business, so our service will double.

We've gotten a lot of unhappy customers from them, and we are the only place they recommend to their friends. If you're in a good retail area, I say go for it; but don't just do computer repair. Look into selling new and refurbished computers as well.
 
The city I live in has about 68,000 people and the county has around 1 million. I think I would decent, since my office is surrounded by mostly residential neighborhoods.

What kind of POS/work order software do you use?

We have service sheets that have info on customer name, address, phone number, data backup request, if they left their power cord, and description of the problem. Carbon copy sheets so the customer has our number. The customer and a service tech fill it out and tape the yellow sheet to the machine, and give the white copy to the customer. It's simple to us, but some customers get easily confused by it.

POS is just a Dell Optiplex GX620 with a 32GB SSD running XP Pro and Quickbooks POS.
