Is it worth me buying windows xp and hard drive for a laptop to sell?

Hi everyone,
I have fixed my laptop and it's a good one with 4gb ram and it originally had windows 7 and 500gb hard drive,
the problem is I do wish to keep my hard drive and windows 7, meaning that to sell it I will have to buy a new hard drive and operating system, but windows 7 is expensive.

Will it work if I buy a 320gb hard drive and windows xp? is this compatible and is it easy to do? would you say it's worth doing, the laptop sells for about £120 without hard drive and OS, but about £160 with them, is there anyway I can get a hardrive and OS fr £40?

Thanks :)

Grab a hard drive and throw linux on it. Free vs paying for a OS that may or may not be compatible (depends on the graphics card. AMD dropped XP with the HD6000m release and Nvidia dropped support for XP with the GTX470m and GTX480m as well as the entire GT(X)500m line.)

Is Linux free? wow - the graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 4570 supporting HyperMemory™ technology

Specifications are :)

Do you think it will work? thanks! :)

That is what AMD says about it.

Linux is free. It does not always play fair with AMD graphics, but it should be okay if you are not gaming on it. I would suggest Ubuntu or Mint. Just download it, and burn it to a disk, boot from disk and install. It can be done with USB too.

thank you so much :) I'll give it a go! I'm going to have to get a cheap hard drive, then download linux onto it and sell the laptop :) there hard to sell without OS/hard drives I think, but I really hope it supports the graphics card :) thank you :)

It's on the machine. It cannot be transferred off that machine. So yes, you can use that key to reactivate Windows on that PC.

thank you so much! :) do laptops take only 2.5 inch hard drives and also does it matter what rpm the hdd are? do they need to be the same as original one? and is it simple to put in and install windows 7 onto a hard drive? I was wondering how do I download windows 7 onto a hard drive without any OS?

Thanks! :)

Any 2.5" SATA HDD will work.

And to install Windows, you download the necessary version you need (that I linked above) and burn it to a DVD. Then just boot to that DVD and install Windows.

Afterwards you need to go to the manufacturers support site and download the device drivers (wireless, video, ethernet, etc.).

oh I understand! that's great thank you so much for all your help! :) I can get a tidy bit of money for my laptop towards my new build now! :) thank you :) what sort of disks do I need to burn it on like the model of them? thanks :)

How is reinstalling Win 7 on your laptop going to help you? I thought the whole point was that you wanted to keep the larger drive AND Win 7 for your new build? The key on the bottom of the laptop is only valid to reinstall Windows on THAT machine.

You can pick up any Blank DVD to burn Windows 7 onto, they don't need to be any specific model.

Pick up a small 2.5" Hard Disk, (you need to confirm whether your motherboard uses IDE or SATA) and then get the correct interface drive.

You can't transfer the Windows 7 that you had on your laptop onto your new desktop. The best bet is to backup the files you want from the drive and format it to remove the existing Windows Installation, then you can keep the drive to do as you wish with.

Also, to pick up a 320GB 2.5" disk it's likely going to cost you around £30 used, is it really worth all the trouble just to (maybe) make £10 profit?

I already told him that.

And as said, you can use any DVD. I prefer Memorex myself.

thank you :) I have purchased a new copy of Windows 7 already for my new build :) Just wanted to sell the laptop with the Windows 7 and hard drive as it will increase the value and make it easier to sell, as it's been on eBay for a very cheap price over a week without selling, hoping that after fixing the power fault that it will sell soon :)

But if it doesn't I'll buy a new hard drive and install Windows 7 onto it :) and sell to a friend
