I am wondering if you can split in game sound and skype so i can hear the game out of my speakers and skype out of my head set.

Yeah. Just change your Skype settings to the output you want.

Is this a USB headset or just a standard plug it into your sound card headset?

You need to set the game to go through your sound card instead of the headset and then change the options in Skype to send Skype calls through the headset.

For the game, check the sound settings of the game. Otherwise go in the sound control panel and change your primary sound device. Then in Skype just open the sound settings so you hear the Skype call through the headset.
