I have a Pioneer 5.1 home theater system. Is there any way to connect this to a computer? If so, how?

It's a digital coaxial connection on the receiver to the DVD player.

geta cable to connect from the 3.5mm jack from your pcs headphone port / line out into the twin phono (the red and white inputs) in the amp

What exactly do you want a surround sound system for on your computer?
The only plus side i see is feeling the thumps of gunshots and explosions from games.

lol, he's prolly making a hometheatre. and as far as gaming goes, you are at a huge advantage w/ a surround sound system. You can tell where a person is coming from and get a lot better judgement of how close they are, ect.

Figured. hahha
Anyways thats a sick deal, having surround sound.
i'd toss my dvd player in the bin and just use my computer.
then stream my tv through the computer.
:)

I'm running my Computer through my existing Home theater system.
Although, I'm wondering if there is a big difference when listening to music and playing games or watching movies and such between RCA/Optical.

I'm using the current Onboard sound, using the 3.5mm jack on the rear of my computer that divides in to the Two RCAs (twin phono) then goes in the the reciever.

I know the system can provide amazing sound, since the 7.1 receiver I'm using retailed for $999 last year, but I managed to swindle a guy on craigslist down to 60 bucks for it, lol. He was really desperate, and it's in flawless condition (used it for about 6-7 months, so I know it's working properly and not funked up).
and the speakers.. well, don't get me going on those /sigh.

So anyway, I know the theater can provide great sound, but is there really an improvement with a sound card? Is it worth it?

edit;

conflict between volumes I can answer.
That one is kinda shady.
Usually I just leave the Reciever [on the theater system] at about 70% of its max or so.
Then I control the sound through windows on my keyboard (Logitech G15).
That way if I want it really loud, I can have it.. or if I want it really quiet, I can have that too.
Since it's all done by %ages based on what is playing.

I agree with Synesthesia's recommendation... for best quality you want to go with something with a digital output.
