Is it possible to build a functional computer with only one component (i.e. only RAM,or only hard disk) ?

If it is ,would it cost much, and what its speed would be?

Are you talking about just having Memory/RAM or a harddrive, not both. Dont really get where your coming from.

If you talking about nothing but Memory/RAM or a harddrive and nothing else. Dont know. You could lay a stick of RAM or a Harddrive on a table and do some ESP on it or poke it with a stick or something, dont think it will work.

A computer functions in the same way your body does. Each individual part has a function that cannot be done by another part and must work with the other parts to make a working whole. So unless the part was modified to do all the roles that it doesn't already do (which would modify it beyond even being able to call it what it was before) the answer is no.

Re

Sorry,I meant to ask something different.I meant ,is there a possibility to built such a computer that will function with just one type of memory ,example: only RAM,only hard disk,or only cache memory.I would be glad if you answer in a more detailed way if you know a reasonable answer, thanks to all ...

no way it could only run on ram because there wouldn't be enough storage space, and it would be deleted every time you turn off you pc.

cant be only hard drive cause the transfer rates are too slow

cant be only cache cause that is like 32kb in hdd's and maybe a couple megabytes in a processor, and its not user accessible.

Actualy until HDD's came along computers used a RAM/ROM setup where the OS would be loaded from removeable disks.

yes, you can still put an os on a flash drive. but ram erases all its memory when the power it cut, or pc is restarted.

Technically you could use a RAM drive, but that's not really feasible because you'll only have 4GB maximum of RAM hard drive space. And there's no way to run a computer without the CPU's L1 and L2 cache.

there are ram hard drives out there, they aren't cheap, they go up to 32gb worth of capacity(using 4gb sticks) they are also required to have a battery back up, unless you want to have to reinstall everything, every time the power goes out, or you turn off your computer

Closest thing would be a solid state drive. They are bleeding edge technology but are available for home computers.

how would that be anything like it, that is just like having a normal hard drive, only faster.

See I think that you probably could run a computer with just the memory, it would be slow and you could only have small programs and you would lose said programs after you turn the system off, but that sounds remarkably similar to the older computers, I think it would be possible, but not worth doing
