Is it a good or bad idea to purchase items separately

I was thinking about buying my hdd and optical drives then getting the other stuff a little later, is that a good or bad idea in you guys opinion. When building should you only purchase everything at once?

Doesn't make any difference. Buy what you can when you have the money I guess. My last (current) build was done over a few months.

The only things I would wait so I had them all at the same time is the motherboard, CPU and video card. Hard drives, power supplies, optical drives and cases don't move around in price that quickly, however by waiting even just a few weeks, you will find that the component you were going to get may have come down in price, or you can get better for your budget

The answer is, it depends

If you can get a group discount rate, you might try going for the combo. OTOH, you may have a preference for certain components over others.

what if for example i purchase something but i won't have all the other items to test that one item. then ill probably only have a month to rma it.

No you won't.

A decent PSU will come with 3-5 year warranty
Hard Drive will come with 1-3 year (unless OEM)

The DVD drive probably will have 1 year at most, but they are cheap as chips, so doesn't really matter a whole lot. You may be ~$20 out of pocket, which will suck, but when considering the full price of the system isn't a whole lot, and that could probably wait.

I don't see the point in getting it component by component anyway to be honest. You will just be wasting warranty time, wasting store RMA time, as you said, and you will be cluttering up your home
