I think that's 39 or 40 images there, and using just over 8GB of 16GB, so I'd say if you plan to have a lot of files open at once, you want more than 8GB, but for editing one image at a time then 8GB is plenty. I used to have 8GB and was fine.

What about a 1GB TIFF/PSD file

Never had a PSD which is 1GB lol. Had some TIFFs from Photomatix Pro which were big though.
