Ok so as you may or may not know, I was trying to watch a movie while cleaning my teeth and basically gave my iPod Touch 2nd Gen a shower.

The screen has stopped working but when you plug it in you can put apps, music and movies on no problems. But the screen is gone. Just shows up as a white screen every now and then.

When it first happened, it wouldn't turn on until the next morning when it started showing a white screen every time I pressed a button.

Anyway nowdays it doesn't do anything. Unless I plug it into the charger and then it shows the white screen again...

I think that the screen is the only thing broken and the rest is probably fine...
Also apple has water damage indicators on all ipods and mine hasn't been triggered so it still might be able to be taken back under warranty.

Here are the options I think I have.

1. Send it to apple. I'm not sure how to do this and it was purchased in Australia while I am currently in India. I could send it to Candy who could take it to the apple store where it was purchased, his name is even on the receipt because he paid for it. It is pretty likely that the iPod will go missing in the mail because Indian post is very unreliable. Candy actually tried sending me far cry 2 and that never arrived. Lots of stuff doesn't make it without getting stolen. That is my main problem with doing this.

2. Send it to an iPod repair company. There are certain companies like one that operates through ebay who repair iPod problems, even water damage and so on. So it is quite likely that they would be able to fix it. It would probably be quite expensive and again there would be the possibility that it would go missing in the post. I can't afford to spend much right now.

3. Get a replacement screen from ebay. I found one for $30 and if the screen was the only problem then I could just replace it and everything would be find. This is my favourite option because it is inexpensive and doesn't require me to risk losing the iPod in the post. However if there are any more problems then just with the screen, then I have a faulty iPod with a brand new screen and the warranty has been voided so I can't send it to apple.

Please read through this all so you know why I prefer some options which would normally seem better. Keep in mind that I have pretty much have no money at the moment.

how much insurance could you put on the ipod? because i would insure it for the cost of a new ipod touch, and then mail it to candy, if it gets lost/stolen, you pretty much get a new ipod either way

Thats actually a good idea :) I mean that seems like the best option because if it gets there theres a good chance of it getting replaced and if it doesn't get there I can get money for it.

just be sure to document sending it, so you can prove that you actually own the thing, because it they lose it, they really aren't going to want to cough up the money

Yeah India is very hard to get anything done like that. I mean to claim that much money you will have alot of trouble. I'll have to go in with a local guy who can argue just as well as the guys at the post office can haha. I'll post it by DHL because they are a half decent courier and should be easier to claim my money back.

So does everyone think that option 1 is going to be the best option?

I'll send it to Candy and have it insured so that if it does get lost in the mail I can get money for it and if it doesn't get lost then Candy can go to the apple store and get it replaced... Should work out fine and I am pretty much protected unless of course Apple doesn't replace it.

Does it cost money to send it to Apple? Or if you give it to the store it was purchased at, will they just send it in?

Other: I would sit in a corner and cry until someone felt
pity for me and bought me a new one.

(As I child, I was conditioned into solving all my problems
by going to my parents. It has turned me into an indisposed
adult that cannot create any solutions
)

I would get the replacement screen from Ebay :)

Apple will probably cost a furtune to repair.

lol

but i would send my ipod back to apple... who knows, they might just end up giving you a new one...

I just did a really quick search on Apple's website- you might want to do it again so you can specify your exact location in India. Are you in traveling distance to any of these places?

You'll probably have to pay, but it might be the most secure option if you live near any of them and can deliver it yourself personally.

I don't know if there are any trustworthy apple places near me. And to get there I'd have to go to Delhi which is a long car trip and costs a few thousand rupees. We don't have the money right now to do that.

The only option I really want to do is just get a replacement screen. But if it doesn't work because something else is wrong then I am in trouble... and once I've opened it up to do that, the warranty is voided.

If I did send it to apple while it was under warranty would they charge me to repair it? Wouldn't it be done free under warranty?

I mean maybe I might just try the screen replacement thing. Thats the best option because if it works then I spend very little and everything is fine. However If I send it to Australia and it got lost in the mail, I'd get a new ipod's worth of money back because i'd have insured it. All I have to worry about is if it gets there fine and then they wont replace it.

WAIT. I have a plan. I insure it, send it to Candy. If it gets lost I get my money for it, if it doesn't get lost then I can send him money to get a replacement screen off ebay and he can fit it. That way I get the possible insurance payout and if I don't then there is still a chance that the screen replacement will work out fine.

Does everyone agree that this is my best option? If the screen doesn't work out then I'll give up. It will cost too much for apple to repair it if the warranty has been voided.

Actually nah, here is my final plan.

1. send it to Candy and get insurance for the iPod so that I get my money back if it does go missing.

2. Candy takes it in to the apple store and hopefully they replace it. If for some reason they won't replace it, I'll give him money to buy a replacement screen and see if that works.

3. If the replacement screen works then WIN! if it doesn't work then I give up and forget about the whole thing. He can use the white screen as a flashlight or something.

What I would like to know is, Nevakonaza said it might cost a fortune to repair. Did you mean by apple? Or by a repair company? Because Apple should replace it as it is under warranty.

I was gonna say the same thing. As long as Apple still consider it to be under warranty they will probably just send you a new one.

Cool. The thing is I don't really want it that much anymore. I'd rather have a portable dvd player. You can get decent ones for the price of an iPod touch. I'll most likely get Candy to sell it once it is working because then he can send me the money and I can buy a portable dvd player. I only use the iPod for movies really. So why not buy something with a decent screen?

Plus it would probably get stolen in the mail if he tried to send it back to me in India haha.
