iPod Dying?

I've had my iPod (5th Generation) for about 3 years now. I'm pretty sure it's dying on me. I can play songs and browse through the interface when the player is plugged into an electronic source (wall charger only) but if it is stand alone it dies every time.

When the player is plugged in it works as it should. But whenever I take it off the charger it's only a matter of time before it dies. The battery is at 90%, but each time I select a song while the player is not on a charge it dies and I can't reset it.

I'm thinking this iPod is dying. I have my entire library on my hard drive right now, waiting for a new unit that can accommodate my large library. I just need assurance that this is indeed what's happening. I can go buy a new one in the near future...but I don't want to drop 150 bucks if I don't have to.

Let me know of any other tricks you all might know, I'm open to suggestions.

That happened to my first gen mini. I think the battery might just be wearing out since it's somewhat old. The other thing is i think (not 100% sure) that leaving them constantly plugged in leads the battery to wear out faster (I did this with my mini).

There are services that replace the battery for fairly cheap but I dont have experience with them. My library expanded so constantly changing the music in my mini was a hassle so I was going to buy a new iPod anyways.

Well I'm in the process of going through apple to get a new battery, or have it sent out for a replacement battery. Apple's customer service is terrible. Since my iPod is X years old, I am not eligible for complementary phone service? It seems I'm not eligible for any customer service on their end what so ever. It'll cost me 70 dollars to replace my battery. Apple needs to seriously consider making their customer service less costly.

**EDIT** There seems to be another method to make this battery change easier. Evidently I can just buy a new battery and have it shipped to my house and do it myself, for 30 bucks or so. I'll have to cancel my apple customer service request.

Thanks for the idea epidemik, there's always something I miss whenever I start tinkering with things.

You can usually replace it by yourself if you want to, at least I did that with my mini. Try googeling around.

I found

Just wondering the credibility of the website. They seem to have a bunch of news organizations that "support?" them. This is my preferred method of repairing my iPod. It beats spending 70 bucks on the same thing.

***edit***
I found a store that sells a bunch of different batteries for all sorts of things, and my iPod was one of them. I paid 30 bucks for the battery, done deal. The iPod is working fine now. Now I'm reorganizing my library, which will take awhile
