ipad vs laptop

Hi. Christmas is approaching and we promised our son to buy him an ipad or laptop. He is undecided what to buy. I know that mostly it depends on what you need it for, however I would like some suggestions from you. And I have one question about the ipad. Can you play java and shockwave games such as the games in facebook on the ipad?

I would recommend the transformer prime by asus. The price is about the price of a windows 7 laptop. It runs the android system, can be upgraded to android 4.0. The best thing of this device is it is a laptop and a tablet. The keyboard dock is about the price of a good motherboard. But, I don't know where you can get this device, maybe somewhere in eBay.
Note: it can run flash games by installing the puffin browser inside it. ( costs a bit in the play store). But I am not sure about java.
 
If he wants to use it to play games then definitely a Windows laptop. If all he wants is to browse the web and view videos, a tablet.
 
to be honest.... my iPad 3 (the new iPad) is sitting in my room, rotting.... I don't find it too useful anyways... just get one of em ultrabooks
 
Of course a laptop running an Windows OS, if he wants to play counter strike like any other kid
 
iPad cannot measure with a laptop at all.
If games are his high priority then definetely a laptop.
Besides as the time goes on,he will want to do more and more things so a Windows laptop would be perfect.
 
if all they want to do is browse facebook and play netflix - ipad

if they want to do actual productivity, get a laptop
