yesterday I suspected my neighbor had been downloading large files on my wireless. after confronting the neighbor about the issue, i found out he downloaded some web creator software and "the ip was recorded" according to him (i suppose he tried to register it and they caught him). i already knew he was using my internet for email (we are friends), but i didnt know he was doing anything illegal or downloading large files. i have since blocked him, but now i'm worried about legal action for his stupidity.

should i expect this to be taken to court? the software company has my IP, whats stopping them from coming down on me for his actions?

let me know what you think

Everytime you visit any web page anywhere or download anything your IP is recorded. Just ask him what he downloaded and from where and you can find out if it's a legal site or not. He could have just downloaded a free trial of whatever it was and had the IP put on file for a base of how many people downloaded their software (quailty assurance, sales rate, or whatnot). Technically however it's your IP so you're the one who's going to get the blame. Sometimes they will let you off easy (a fine or something) if you tell them you didn't know what was happening (in this case you didn't), and just act computer stupid. Most likely however, they won't give a damn.

It *was* an illegal site he went to. he tried to register with some serial number he got off the site and they said they logged the ip.

now I'm trying to deal with his poor decision making skills while trying to avoid federal pound me in the ass prison.

do these situations usually end up with a fine or jail time, or do the authorities go after the big timers in most cases?

Fine's, and they dont ussaly spend there time on people who have a pirated copy of one thing.... more like the distributors is who they go after.

how does the fine process work, do they notify me via phone or should I expect law enforcement to show up at my door?

They'll send you a note to cease and desist the downloading or whatever and you just don't do anything and ignore it, they will then not do anything (cause you're not constantly downloading things).
