Internet Sharing Question.

Here's my problem:

I have set up a network cable that is running from one computer which is acting as the host, to another computer with i want to act as the client. I had it working for a bit, then i figured out that a firewall program was blocking the connection to the client computer, so i figured i'd just disable it, so i did that and everything was kosher.

Now, i have played around with the firewall settings a little bit and also the ip settings in the tcp/ip thingy in the network connections right click dialogue, but i haven't been able to connect to the net on the client computer since, with or without the firewall program disabled on the host computer.

So, my question is? how on earth do i fix this major pain the bum? Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Also, if anyone in here knows what settings i need to enable or disable in sygate personal firewall pro (the firewall program which i mentioned in my above description) so that i can have it going and also connect to the internet on both the host computer and the client computer any assistance there would also be great...

I have no idea what i've done to change it, i've been trying to fix this problem for a couple of days and have messed around on both computers trying to get things working, but to no avail....

Does your 'server' have 2 network cards? I'm also assuming you do not have a router or a hub. In your network setup wizard, make sure your 'server' has selected the option of something like "my computer connects to the internet. other computers connect through me" and for the 'client', select the option "my computer connects through a residential gateway" or something to that sort.

this is how the connection is set up.

The host computer is connected to a broadband modem using usb, thiis computer has it's own network card, which is connected to my computer (the client) via my computer's network card using ethernet cable. I have run the wizard on both computers and everything was working fine...

Then i realised that the host computer was running a firewall program called sygate personal firewall, which i had initially turned off when the connection was working, so i turned it off again and everything was working fine again.

Now, the host computer is working fine, internet and all.

My ACTUAL question had to with why this is not the case for the client anymore?

I have mucked around with a few of the tcp/ip settings trying to get it to work, but nothing has changed....so if you can help please do....

And also if any1 knows anything about sygate and what needs to disabled/enabled for a network connection to work that would be great.

And YES i have run the network setup wizard several times on both computers, always running it on the host computer first...

The problem lies with the client computer not being able to communicate with the host computer properly and therefore not being able to connect to the internet via the host's shared internet connection (even with all firewall programs off)

I would prefer to be running firewalls on both comps, but i'm not really all that worried about the client having a firewall, the host computer needs it more...

so If you know what needs to be and have a solution please reply....

Instead of dealing with that hassle, you should consider investing in a router. Internet sharing is a breeze and your computers are much more secure behind a router. Using a router as the backbone of a LAN is much more practical than having one computer sharing a connection to another. I know this doesnt directly answer your question but its a friendly suggestion to make your life easier and your LAN secure and efficient.
