internet problems

i have a real problem with my internet connection atm. it has took me at least 10 minutes to get from google to this site. can any1 tell me whether you HAVE to have your lead from the phone line to your adsl modem connected to an adsl filter??? or can you just wire it direct from phone to modem

You don't put a filter between your modem and the wall socket, the filter goes between a phone/fax/etc and the wall...
