Internal HDD disconnecting and reconnecting while downloading a steam game.

Hello.

I've been using my HDD for a year now and it has run smoothly without any issues.

Recently i've ran into an issue where i could'nt download games from steam, it ran into "Disc write error" if i try to download a game (did'nt matter if it was my SSD, my OS is on my SSD, or my HDD). I was googling for solutions and one of the solutions was to update drivers and stuff "Use this free software etc" I tried using it "Snappy Drivers" or something like that. It showed me that 13 drivers are out of date, where one of those drivers were storage controllers "Intel SATA / AHCI Controller" . After this driver update, i restarted my PC and tried downloading something on steam. The HDD disconnected and reconnected. when it reconnected it showed a notification on the bottom right:wut.png
It kept doing it once every 5 seconds to 1 minute.
The HDD also disapeared and reapeared in the file explorer.
This ONLY occurs when downloading things from steam. Havent tried to download anything from the web to my HDD.

The Driver:

I also Reinstalled my Windows fully, the issue hasnt gone away. The issue appeared ONLY after i updated the drivers.

1. Never use third party software to download/install drivers, most of them have malware included with the software. Always get them from the manufacturer. You have an Intel motherboard so you would go here and do the auto detect and install. However, since you motherboard is so outdated, there may not be any newer drivers than a few years ago.

Click on the download now button and it will download some software which you will have to run in order for it to detect what drivers need updated.

2. What sata port are you using? Sata 1 and Sata 2 are the faster speed ports while Sata 3 and 4 are the slower ports. You might want to try a different one.

I believe i'm using SATA 2. i can check that by taking a look on the motherboard and the ports themselves right?

It will say what they are next to the ports themselves. The Sata 1 and 2 ports are the ones closest to the blue USB 3 connection.

As per John those driver updaters are almost always a scam, unless they're from the vendor directly such as Dell.

It'd probably be worth seeing the SMART stats on the drive, then you can see how many reconnects or what errors are incrementing. You could try reseating the SATA cable or a new cable as a preliminary troubleshooting step.

Something like CrystalDiskInfo will give you the SMART table from the drive.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that Snappy Driver installer is one of the good ones. I used it when I worked repair and it was just a data repository and allowed for offline all in one driver installs, didn't push viruses or unnecessary products. Haven't used it in a few years but generally I had no problems with it. That said, most driver software is a scam. Snappy is supported by donations I think. On Windows 10+ though this really isn't necessary since Windows just does it for you usually.

I'd run a hard drive test, guessing drive is on its way out.

I've been facing the same issue since today. And I don't think it's because of any malware drivers or something. It's something else.
