intermittent volume reduction

so every now and then i get on my computer to listen to some sweet jams on my itunes and i play a song, the volume sounds like its decreasing and then increasing. its not a big difference in volume, its just noticeable. i tried a song that i imported from a cd, compared to a song bought off of itunes and it seems to be the same. im using an external logitech 5.1 speaker system, and i control the volume with its own dial. what could be causing this? your help is very much appreciated!

My 5.1 surround system in my room acts up sometimes. It would be this muffled tone until I turned it up loud and then back down. Sounds to me like you need to try this through more then just one output device. Try a pair of headphones and another set of speakers to see if it does the same thing. If it doesn't then the 5.1 is your problem, if it does then its your computer.
 
Also....as a side note...I know some Logitech speaker setups have a headphone jack on the controller.
DO NOT USE THAT, plug directly into your computer with the headphones.
 
actually yes i do the same thing, i turn it up loud and then back to the normal listening volume and it seems to stop, i havent tried headphones yet though. ill get to that the next time it acts up.
 
What has been suggested so far will tell you where the source is. I would suspect the volume control of the sound system. Usually when that has a problem the changes in volume are quite noticeable. The mild volume changes you have may be due to a different design of control.
