Interesting thing with my dial-up....

Ok for the past few weeks my computer had been plagued with BSODs so I figured I'd track down the problem. It was a problem with an HSF.sys file. This is the Windows default driver for my dial-up modem. I figured it was corrupted so I went and downloaded a new driver for that modem. I couldnt find an exact driver but the closest one was a driver for a Fax + Modem. I downloaded and installed it and it worked but thats not the wierd part.... Ever since then (a couple days ago) whenever I get a call instead of booting me off the net like it used to do it the phone actually shows the Caller ID and everything its supposed to, it just doesnt ring and answering the phone just returns the dial-tone screech indicating that it is connected to the internet. I thought this was wierd and wanted to see if this happens to anyone else. The only explanation I can think of is that since part of the driver is for a Fax part of a modem, it must be able to pass calls through somehow. Anyone think they can explain?

Yeah thats what i reckon the explanation is but it doesnt cut you off!Thats good as.

Heres another story; once we coulnd be bothered taking out this huge long phone line every time we wanted to use the net.So we got a phone port thing in the study thus enabling us to connect without getting a huge long cable out every time so we left it connected. After we did that we noticed that the PC was turning on for some reason. We eventually that every time some1 called us the PC turned on.Now we got dsl and that has never happened again.Probly cos of the way it works and the line filters.

I'm pretty sure that the motherboard on your comp was set for the modem to be able to wake the computer up. I had that setting on mine once and my computer would be on when I came home after school. I turned that option off and it doesnt do that anymore.
