Intel's Naming Process...

But here’s where it gets confusing. This now means that current Core 2 Duo owners now fall under the Core i3 or Core i5 brand, but the chips are still going to be sold under the older naming system. Users shopping for a Core 2 Duo system in a few months, however, will instead find a “Core i3” rig in its place. It’s the same computer, but it has a different name, which will confuse a lot of people in the process of the name changes. Worse still, the revisions of current processors will probably adopt the new naming system, so the same architecture found in the CPUs will have two names. I can see it now:

“I have a Core i3 E7200 running at 4Ghz! Beat that!”

“I have a Core 2 Duo E7200 at 4Ghz as well.”

“So what? Mine’s still better.”

“…”

“…”

“… Idiot”

At least the rating system is informative.

I bet it'll bet confusing. I still can't remember which Exxxx is which yet, lol. Source: http://nag.tidemedia.co.za/2009/07/journey-to-the-core/

...wtf?

So does this mean we'll probably see CPUs sold as "i3" units that have "core 2 duo" printed on the back? If so, Intel's returns department is going to have to put in some overtime...

I'm not sure, but that would suck. I'm sure they'll start printing i3 on the back, but there's still going to be quite a few C2Ds floating around.

I don't remember which e is which either except for my old, trusty e6750, 1333mhz fsb, 2.66ghz stock, 65nm conroe etc etc :P any other though, forget it, no clue.

But I think that the only people that will get confused are those which don't even understand what core 2 duo or i3 means, the people that think a PD will work as well as a C2D, or a celeron D will work as well as an i3 (which is the same as C2D :P)

Yep, well, we'll probably just have to wait until Intel releases those i3s and starts THE renaming process  :D

So maybe my E6750 in a 775 socket ain't dead yet if it's going under the i3 range. Long live 775 socket :good:

maybe, but knowing intel they will somehow make it so that won't work, just to muck up cross compatibility again
