integrated audio good enough for gaming?

Im configuring a gaming pc and was wondering if theres a notable difference between a system with 7.1 integrated and a system with a 70 dollar sound card..

Assuming there isn't some sort of massive EMI or driver problem, I doubt you could ABX the difference of onboard and a seperate sound card without a fairly revealing setup. Most PC speakers have too much distortion for it to be really relevant.

Ok so if i were to use a basic 7.1 logitech speaker system (100-200 dollars) the integrated sound would perform just as good (no extra hiccups or distortions) as a <100 soundcard? Just to be clear because im assembling my gaming pc now :)

Depends on what you want to do. Many integrated sound devices don't do well upmixing stereo to 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. Thus if you're listening to mp3 files or other stereo music files it doesn't play through all speakers.

Intergrated is fine for most people, especialy now on new mobos the intergrated is quite decent with it been HD and everything.

although i dont think you could compare them to a decent dedicated sound card.

Heres a good budget one...

Although its not true X-FI...its way way better than my motherboards intergrated HD 5.1 on the motherboard provides.

running Logitech X-540 5.1 speakers :)
