I've been trying to fix this no-sound problem on my comp for milleniums and it has tired me out so much.
but..

1 - consider me computer-stupid because i do not have any idea how to fix ANYTHING.
2 - some guy online confused me. he told me to check the 'device manager' and do something with it that i don't even know what he was telling me to do. :(

i really need someone to help me =(
so can anyone be kind enough?
i feel like i'm the only one out there with this problem because you are all whizzes and i'm just a complete failure at these things.
besides, i'm only 17 and my parents are pissed at me for this; my budget is so slim. i must fix this by myself =O

someone please help?
btw, i dont really understand the technical terms they use online.
  :(

Well don't worry about the stupidity stuff. ;)

First we could use your computer specs or model number

If I understand correctly, you are hearing no sound from your sound card. Let's check this first:

1. Is the sound card plugged in?
2. Are the speakers connected?
3. Can you hear a buzzing or is it totally silent?
4. Does Windows (or Windows Media Player) give you an error that there is no sound device installed, or is there just no sound?
5. Do you know that your speakers work?
6. Are the speakers on?
7. Are the drivers for the sound card properly installed?

You can access the device manager through the control panel. Go to the system icon, click on the hardware tab, then the device manager button. Tell me what you see under the category of audio hardware or something of the sort.

1. Is the sound card plugged in? -- how do i check that? lmao i told you i'm stupid.
2. Are the speakers connected? yeah.
3. Can you hear a buzzing or is it totally silent? -- silent.
4. Does Windows (or Windows Media Player) give you an error that there is no sound device installed, or is there just no sound? -- no errors. just no sound.
5. Do you know that your speakers work? yeah they do =P
6. Are the speakers on? yeah! lol!
7. Are the drivers for the sound card properly installed? NO IDEA!

in device manager under "sounds, video, and game controllers" it says:

- Gameport Joystick [which i dont use]
- MPU-401 Compatible [what in the world?]
- Wave Device for Voice Modem [which i dont use]

i think that confusing internet guy told me to do something that deleted one of them. gosh =O

have you ever had sound from the speakers? it may be drivers are not installed. I take it you are running Windows Xp

I posted this a few days ago in a different thread for somebody who was having problems with sounds:

If you need drivers, try http://drivermagic.com and do a search there. They've got almost any driver you need (for free too!).

If you don't know exactly what drivers you need, go to http://driveragent.com and get a free scan. It'll tell you if you have any bad/outdated drivers and offer driver downloads (for a price). If you're like me who doesn't have the money to shell out, just copy and paste the name of the driver and do a search at drivermagic.com

By the way, the driveragent scan only works with Internet Explorer. Just make sure that you do a spyware scan after that so you can be sure that driveragent doesn't leave any (nasty) traces.

It seemed to work for the guy. Here's a link to that thread:

my windows xp crashed so i had to get a neighbor to install 98.
=O

uhh what do you mean crashed? If it just froze you should have rebooted it or something, not install a new OS. Many drivers out there are only made for win2k and xp, not 98, so you might have to find win98 drivers for your sound card now...
