In desperate need of recommendation...

I need some help with setting up my first network. First of all, I have a broadband internet connection. I have two desktop computers (running windows xp) which need to have internet access, as well as access to each other's files. Also, I would like to be able to play LAN games between these computers. My xbox also needs internet access, but it is not necessary for the xbox to be networked with the other computers.

Now, I think I need a router, or a hub, or a switch, or perhaps something else; I'm not really sure. What would you recommend? And what sort of cables will I need?

EDIT: By the way, I want a wired connection, not wireless.

This is the one i have. Works great wired and wireless. I would leave the option available for wireless just incase you need it. You can always turn it off.

I have worked with this netgear one and it works good aswell.

They both have 4 ports for ethernet cords. You will need to run those to each PC. You can buy them in special lengths, or buy a spool.. depending how big your house is.

With the router you will be able to do all the things yoiu listed above.

have fun..
