This is a cable for a portable hard drive.

What type of connection is this, marked with red arrows?

It looks like the normal SATA power and data conntections. Would be able to tell better if the picture was more head on with the connector instead of at an angle.

So that cable is simply a USB connection that splits into a separate SATA power and SATA data connection?

It looks very similar yes. Do you have a sata hard drive that you can atttach it to?

No, I'm working something out. It's not the cable that I'm interested in, it's the actual hard drive that the cable belongs to. I''m working out if I can connect it without using their own cable.

I'm sure you can. External hard drives don't differ from internal hard drives once you remove it's enclosure.
