I would like to have my own personal email server.

you would need to run email server software on a computer that will run 24/7. Microsoft have a server called "microsoft exchange" but i dont think its free inless your a student or what not. have a google and see what software is available, im sure there is some that are free.

Personal Email

(to tobywuk...) exchange 2007 is not ideal as a personal email server unless you have powerful servers running windows 2003, and have a internet connection with a high upload speed, and you need to buy licenses(they are 100usd for one cal!) and exchange 2007 requires ttechnical expertise(trust me i am a network admin for a company running exchange 2007, and exchange servers require a lot knowledge to keep them runnin smoothly)

(to all)The best personal mail solution if you have no dedicated server onsite is to have exchange hosted for you by another company, all the features of exchange with out having to administrate a server (it is about 7USD a month for 1 user on 1and1.com personal hosting, with 1GB mailbox and RPC\HTTPS access, and a free domain name.

If you want you could just sign up to a free service that provides pop3 (www.bluebottle.com) or one that give webmail(www.hotmail.com)

if you really need to you can get a VHD 180 day trial of exchange 2003(a preconfigured virtual pc) off microsoft for free, and for a fee they will give you a unlimited virtual pc for learning uses only go here for a trial and read the site for more details on exchange
hope this helps
