Hi there wiZ, what side of computing are you into? Into more the Hardware/Software side of things rather than website developing etc?

You can start by looking around the forum at the solutions that are given.

Hey! I'm not an expert by any means, but if you just read through as many threads, their problems, and their solutions, or whatever information they contain, I find that you learn a lot. I have spent the last year or two on several forums and just by reading and trying to help, I have learned a ton! So READ READ READ!!! Would be my advice.

This, I started on this forum 5 years ago (I was 12-13) with no knowledge. Now I'm 18, qualified I.T technician (A+, Network+, MCSA, MCP, MCTS, CCNA) and am working in the I.T field.

The future is in your hands.

Myself am into Networking, depends what your interests really are. You would be best to first know your ins and outs about the hardware side of things of computers before going into networking. CompTIA's A+ certification is a good way to start. http://www.comptia.org/certifications/listed/a.aspx

Apart from that it is good to surround yourself with techie's such as yourself and share ideas etc.. A good start is to look around this forum as suggested and become a regular member.

im actually studying for the A+ right now since the beginning of march. i only got until september-november to decide which field i should take. im going to college around that time. what do you think of trade schools? im really in a hurry to graduate.

im 22 yrs old. might be a stupid question but do you think im too old to get into the game at this age? i see a lot of young people who are way ahead of me

I'm not to sure about the college/trade school type of scene as it is completely different over here in New Zealand.

It's definitely NOT to late to get to the game, your obviously have to start at the bottom once you get an IT related job (Helpdesk technical support) and move yourself up.

It's weird. People ask me how I got good with computers and truly, I have no idea what to tell them. It's just a combination of being around them for so long, and learning what you are doing hardware and software wise you just get to know everything.

I do sometimes wonder what it is like to be an average user and have really no clue what any of the mouse clicks or command prompts mean. When I look at a computer (hardware and software wise) I look at....how do I say it....currency (how current the software/hardware) is and see how it is performing.

In the computer shop, customers will be like "Oh it's running fine." I'll toss it on the bench and it'll be dog slow. They obviously have patience if it's gonna take 5 minutes for the computer to boot and load every damn start-up program.

If you're getting A+ certified, I think this is the best free resource that I have found, there are video tutorials for every section of A+. It was a really nice way for me to learn the basics and it starts you at the beginning as if you have no knowledge or prior experience whatsoever.

As far as deciding what part of the IT field to get into, I'm kind of in the same boat as you so I'm trying to get experience with networking, programming, website development, etc... to get a feel for what I really want to do. There's really no other way to determine which aspect of the field will be best for you besides gaining experience in different areas.

Good luck dude!

I also want to learn more with computers, i recently had the idea to make a website, but before learning php, i thought it's better to know how to fix the computer myself, in case it breaks down... don't like depending on technicians with full schedules, for the obvious reasons

best way (in my opinion) to get experience with the hardware is to rip open the case and take a look inside. go online and just look up the various parts and learn about them. ask us questions as well. we'd be more than happy to help you along :) (well, probably :P) upgrades are also good ways to get hands on experience. looking to do any in the future?

I started assembling PCs back when I was very young. My cousin used to show me parts and computers and I became very interested. Over time I collected many old and usually donated machines all which had various problems and I just learned by doing. My sources of info were mainly Maximum PC (1999 earliest issue), my cousin, and a Windows 95 manual that was like 1000+ pages. Eventually I obtained an internet connection but it was dialup and I used it mostly for downloading MP3s. Only now a day, with the infinite software problems I enounter, do I use Google to help me out.
