I need help...

I found this piece of hardware in my house because it was making a loud beeping sound, as far as I can tell there is a speaker, a battery and a magnet, 2 switches (one with 2 positions, the other has 3 positions). I don't know what it does, or where it came from. Can anyone help?

Where/what did it come from? I assume this wasn't buried in a wall without any external enclosure.
 
omega has a point. Where did it come from? Did it have a case or enclosure that it was in?

Since it has a speaker I don't think it could be a bug. I would think that a battery and mic would be the basic construction of a bug. If your really concerned about it, consult your local sheriff at 911 or take it to your local precinct and ask them.
 
It was stuck to the bottom of an entry way table using the magnet, there was no case. What you see is what I found, minus the battery, I removed that as soon as I found it. Very strange!
