I'm new here. Please be gentle and patient with me. Thanks.

Ok here's what I've got going on. I run a small computer lab with 12 computers networked to an old (PII) server running windows 2000NT. The server is on it's last legs and I want to make one of the desktops into a server. I have the software, (Windows 2003 Server) and the time to work on it, so what do I need to know?

Things y'all might need to know:

1. The server will be used to house educational software programs for students who use the lab.

2. Students can connect to the internet without going through the server.

3. I do not want to loose any of the information that is already on the student computer. (The one that will become the new server.) But I will sacrifice it if I have to. Yes I will back everything up before I start.

4. I have programs on the old server that I need to move onto the new server without loosing the data. Again if that's not possible I'll understand.

5. The old server is a Gateway 8200ALR PII with 256mb of ram and a 40GB hard-drive running 2000NT server software.

6. The (hopefully) new server is a Gateway 500s P4 2.4Ghz/800Mhz with a 80GB and 256mb ram. It's currently running Win XP Sp2 and I have Server 2003 software ready to load.

If there is anything else you need to know, please ask. Where do I start?

How are the user to access the programs? Do you want them to run them from the server? do you want them to make a local copy when they want to run the application?

Why not just make a local copy of the apps on all the machines?

Each program has it's own wrokstation installer program. For example, PLATO is a program that we use and many colleges use in their Learning Resource Centers. Versions are stand-alone or a network and have different software. It cannot be either or. The network versions comes with over 50 different cd's to install all needed lessons. (It takes all day to install this monster.)

So the software in my case has to be run from the server and users have a shortcut on their desktop to access the program. Which is what the workstation installer program does.

Most if not all of my programs are that way. Did I answer your question?
