its not working for some reason.

this is what i am wanting to do. i have the internet downstairs, and i want to get internet upstairs...

My downstairs is Windows XP, and my upstairs is ME

i have a linksys WRT54GS router, currently set-up on my downstairs computer,

and today, connected a cat5 ethernat cable from the router, to my upstairs ethernet port (i am pretty sure it's a ethernet port, because it fits nicely and clicks, it is a old IBM computer tho, like 1998 or somthing..)

i want to connect my upstairs computer to the internet... i dont know how to do this, i went to home networking etc etc on my upstairs comptuer, and it says it cant find any network adapters.

what am i supposed to do?????

it would be very nice if you could give me some steps :) i am sure this question gets asked alot, but i want to make sure i get this right because its not working out, and i have been trying to for an hour..

thanks, reply quick!

Firstly to make things easier lets call the downstairs computer 1 and upstairs computer 2. Since their location is really not necessary.

First thing to do would be to make sure the netwrok adapter is installed. You can do so by right-clicking My Computer hit properties and the going to Hardware tab and the Device Manager and then check Network Adapters to see if it's there.

running it through the house, i might have twisted the cable a liitle bit or bent it even. i heard this could be meaning my no connection...

also, i have it connected to my ethernet port on my 1998 upstairs IBM computer, but i dont think that i have a ethernet card on it. what do i do?

my upstairs computer only has a PCI dial-up card, not an ethernet card...

it has a ethernet port i think (because i have the cat5 clicked right into it) but would i need a ethernet card even tho i have a port???????

my upstairs comp also shows a yellow explanation point next to "PCI ethernet controller"

any ideas on what i should do or why its not gettin a connection?

my upstairs shows:

under device manager:

"dial-up adapter" ------ and thats all

then under

other devices

"PCI ethernet controller" -- with an explanation point next to it

exalamtion point usually mean that the network card isn't using any resources. Did you try uninstalling the network card and reinstalling the drivers? If not try that

well, to save you all this truble, i recomend bying a wireless PCI card and putting it in. its more easeyer and you dont have to wory about cables though out your house.:o

well, i have a ethernet controller, i just dont have the software or drivers to run it or whatever..

so i need to see the model number and brand of my card first... and then download the software..
