Are the physically close to each other? If so just network them with a cross over cable. Speeds would be MUCH faster.

Do you have any firewalls? If so, add the ip addresses that are allowed to access your comps and then they should be able to see each other.

I don't know what you know, so I ask Do you know about setting folders to share on a network? (I hope so ;))

Could be firewall, check if configuring needed as Pck21 said.

Are your computers on the same workgroup? (Tip: Network wizard will help with that)

Hmm, you connected with dial-up modems? You can get ethernet cards (network cards) for a few bucks, much easier to configure/faster transfers.

Are you running windows xp on both computers?

are you using a modem and splitting the internet cable or are you using a router

you need to use a router to set up a hom network

this might be a stupid question but if you are going to replace the old one with the new one why not just put the old hdd in the new computer as a slave take all the files off and then format it and have that extra storage space?

i got it

sorry it took so long to reply to all of these, i got it figured out, heres what happened. when i ran the home network wizard, i had my firewalls turned off, but once it finished, both of the firewalls automatically turned back on.

but its all good now, thanks for your help.
