I can barely make out the lingo, but...

...I'm trying to learn. See, I don't build computers and I've barely started to understand what goes into them but, geeeeeeeesh, I sure would like to learn. Bought a used one, a P2, a few years ago and I've been playing around with it and loving surfing the net and joining a few forums. Did I mention I'm on dial-up (not for long). Then about 2 weeks ago my son bought me a new one and I can't believe the difference in speed already.

So I probably don't belong here, but I'm trying so hard to be a geek.

Anyways, today I bought a new printer because my old printer needed a parallel port. I was about to buy a converter cable for $60.00, but I thought it wouldn't be wise to invest that much in an old printer. I ended up with a new one and I want to know what y'all think.

I got a Brother HL-4040CDN, Color/Laser. It was on sale for $199.00. Of course, then I had to buy the cable for $30.00, and I bought a 4 year parts and labour warranty for $50.00. It was supposed to be half price.

I had my heart set on HP, I wanted laser and I wanted color. Well? I guess my question is how does "Brother" hold up?

Glad to have you here. Stick around and learn some.

As far as the Printer, have no idea. Never owned a Brother/Laser.

Brother printers are fine, sorry about hearing you paid $30 for the cable though, online a usb cable is only like $3....

 I only print recipes and knitting patterns anyway. Just wondered if I'd made a good deal since it was supposedly on sale for half price at Best Buy.

My only beef with the brother printer is that mine is a network printer and the telnet abilities require software, which is annoying. I would prefer to just use a web browser. That is something that shouldn't affect you or your usage.

Otherwise, it is a pretty good printer. My work probably has several hundred brother printers and if they were crap I am sure the guy in charge of the money would stop buying them.

I installed my new printer all by myself today. WoooooooHooooooooo!

This may be nothing for most of you here, but it's quite an accomplishment for me. I always relied on someone else to install my stuff.

My pilgrimage to Geekdom has started.

Now I can't wait for my wireless connection to come in. It's going to take a while. They couldn't get a signal the first time out so my husband is putting up a high pole and hopefully they'll be able to get the signal. Tomorrow he's going to cement it in the ground. I hate this dial-up connection.

So my next question is, who here is familiar with Xplorenet and is it any good? That's what I'm getting.

Never heard of it here, you cant get cable/dsl where you live?

i would advise against satillite, unless you're going to be paying under $30 a month, currently have wildblue, its so unpredictable in the summer

Yeah, the bad thing about satelite is that for one, unreliable(unlike tv, satelite tv is awesome), for two, the ping is horrible.

From Wild Blue's TOS
Code:
If, however, you do not decrease your Usage Total to 70% or less of the Usage Threshold within the next 30
days, this failure will constitute a second FAP violation. If you violate the FAP in each of four consecutive
months or in each of five calendar months within any twelve month period – whether by exceeding the
monthly Usage Threshold or by remaining in a reduced-speed status -- [B]your use of the service will be limited
to Reduced Access and restricted to Web browsing activities and to sending and receiving e-mail.[/B] Again,
once you reduce your Usage Total to 70% of your Monthly Usage Threshold, your speeds and access will
return to normal.
I would honestly rather have dial up than a form of high speed internet that disables anything other than surfing/email - no videos ect, that's like wire tapping and telling you that you can only call your parents and not your friends.

Nope. They think us farmers are second class citizens. I'm gonna try it anyways. Once the contract is up I can always get rid of it. It's gonna cost me about $39.00 a month.
