HP Sound Issue

My friends HP Desktop's Audio recently stopped working. He told me he had a bug and tried getting rid of it and deleted some files. So I tried to repair his audio, and I went into Device Manager, and for the Audio section, there was a yellow exclamation mark. I went to HP's Driver page, and installed the correct driver for the model of the computer, and while installing an error popped up saying something like it cant find the directory or something.

He's running Windows XP Media Center.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

restore?

Hey there...

This is a shot in the dark, given that I'm no expert, but have you considered doing a "system restore"? If you don't know what this is, it's a feature of Windows that facilitates rolling back the computer to a snap shot of an earlier time. I would think that if your friend deleted some files, it's possible that a system restore might bring back the missing files, and then you could deal w. the audio problem, and then also the bug, given that a restore could also revive some of the corrupted files.

Here's how you access it in XP: start menu-control panel-performance/maintenance-look in left hand column for system restore. Pick a date prior to the mishap, maybe even a few months back, if possible.

There's also a chance that he deleted the files that help run this feature. If that's the case... see if he has a Windows XP disc, and then you could do a fix reinstall (which wouldn't wipe out the whole drive).

Hope this helps

I thought about a System Restore, but I was worried it would erase something important to them.

Would a System Restore still work at this point? If we figured out a date before the accident happened, would it restore?

Thanks.

Yes try a system restore, if that doesn't work.... repair windows, then install the drivers.

BUT DON'T DO THIS UNTIL THE VIRUS HAS BEEN FIXED!

Oh, sorry Cohen, forgot to mention its a different friend.

I don't think he can find his Restore Disk, can I find it online?

Thanks.

Go to Add and Remove programs and see if the sound driver is there. If so uninstall it. Then go to Device Manager, find the sound, right click on it, click uninstall. Then reboot windows and let it redetect the sound. Then try to install the new driver again.
